the cat is out of the bag

glasses: costco // top: thrifted // belt: ?? // jeans: urban outfitters // shoes: c/o bc footwear

First off, this is such a weird statement. The cat is out of the bag.

Does anyone know where this originated? Why were people putting cats in the bag? Did the cat go in there on their own-- maybe to play? Whatever the cause, it's definitely a good thing that they were letting those cats out.

But that's not the point of this post. The point of this post is that my blog and shop have intersected (almost fully) with my real life.

Up until now, I've enjoyed pretending that no one in my day-to-day life (friends, family, coworkers) knew about my blog. I don't know why I thought I could pretend this -- but I decided that I could pretend this. (It's kinda like kids who don't believe in Santa any longer but don't want to tell their parents that they know that a man in a red suit isn't the one getting them presents.)

And then two things happened...

1.) my small group called me out about it. They complimented me on my new line of bags and wondered why I never talked about my blog or shop. They asked hard questions and made me realize that my shame about my blog and shop is unfounded.

2.) a friend took photos of my new bag line. Then she posted it on facebook and linked my PERSONAL account to the post. whoa nelly. Suddenly people were coming out of the woodwork to talk about my shop and blog. So yes, someone let the poor cat out of the bag.

And after some minor panic attacks, I decided it's okay.

Yes, I am still SO awkward talking about my blog and shop in real life (thank you internet screen of courage) but I'm going to do a little better.

So hi day-to-day family and friends. I know you're out there. (waves while avoiding eye contact.) I'm sorry that I don't talk about this space in real life but I just get insecure. But hi-- this is my blog. I like to post about what I wore, decor stuffs and other silly life stuffs. If you like it here, feel free to stick around. If not, no hard feelings. We can still be friends offline.

xo, erika

p.s. like my shoes? they are one of the most comfortable things I own. which, for me, is a super plus.

  2. This outfit is... holy wow. I LOVE IT. Such sweet colors together!

As for me, I fling my blog name around constantly online and off 'cause it's such a huge part of who I am. You should be proud of your blog - it. is. amazing. and your shop - which, if I had the money, I'd totally be buying from *I swear*.

I'm glad someone let the fancy blogging and shopping cat out of the bag. ;)

I know what you mean about feeling embarrassed about real life people knowing about your blog...it totally embarrasses me when my husband mentions it to people. I want to run and hide. So glad you're embracing it :)

  9. i'm proud of you!! (even though it wasn't by your doing) I've slowly told more people about my blog, but still a lot of people don't know and I kind of like it that way! once my closer group of friends found out I found myself thinking more about what I posted - but soon got over that. keep doing what you are doing - i love your blog! and you are the cutest!

  11. I got some bad news. People used to put cats in a bag and throw them in the river to drown them. I know. So there's that, but you look adorable!!

  12. I sometimes will mention my blog in conversation and I don't mind if someone finds it but I don't go out of my way to get people in my "real life" to read it either.

Kudos to you for realizing you're pretty awesome and being okay with it.

  18. I'm glad that you are embracing sharing with those in your real life. =)

I hadn't really thought about your perspective until I read this post.
For some reason I've been super open with all of my friends, real life people, and my immediate family about the fact that I blog. Though, I will be honest and state that I haven't been as open about it with extended family.

This post gave me some food for thought!

  23. I'm glad this happened to you. Because honestly girl, word of mouth is one of the biggest ways of promotion! Time to utilize that outlet now that the cat is outta the bag! ;]

  24. Hey girl! So I mentioned this a little in my post today but most people in my 'real life' don't know about my blog. And when I talk about it I get sooo awkward and make all of these excused for myself about why I do it, etc. Ridiculous. Anyways- I love your jeans. They are basically the perfect length and fit!

When you create a blob and it's not immediately part of your "normal" life, I've been finding, that it IS pretty awkward telling friends/family.. "hey, so I have this blog..." haha. So, basically, I'm right there with ya :)

  33. Why yes, I LOVE those shoes!!! So cute, and what a wonderfully summer-y pop of color. I know what you mean about real life and blog life intersecting. There's just something awkward feeling about it at first. But now that the cat's out (can't help ya with that origin...sorry), I hope it will be an exciting new advertising avenue for you! So nice to meet ya this week via WIWW! Have a wonderful weekend!

  34. You look adorable! My blog is still top secret in my real life. Aside from my hubby my family doesn't even know about it! In fact I think there is only one person in my off line life who knows about my blog and that is only because she also has a blog! It can definitely be scary to put yourself out there like that. Somehow it is easier when it is strangers reading than people who really know you!

  35. ow owwwww! lookin' GOOD lady. i try not to talk about my blog and shop with real peeps either. it's always awkward but you're right. there's nothing to be ashamed of. :)
