lessons in self confidence

tee: out of print books // blouse: F21  // jeans: gap  // booties: Wanted shoes

This month -- only a six days in -- I'm learning self confidence.

The purses I'm starting to sell are more than just pretty things to fill my shop with, they're a big part of me. They're sewed from a pattern I designed, with color schemes I thought of. I taught myself to sew them and made some pretty awful prottypes along the way.

And when I decided they were ready to sell -- I started second-guessing me and all my work.

Though I may come off as confident, it's an act. I am a person who worries a lot, especially about what others think of me. Putting something like this out there made me worry a lot about what others would think of me.

I am lucky to have people who believed in me despite it all. And I felt so good to see that people liked my work when it launched yesterday. Granted, I should not do things just to get praise from others, but it made me feel good and I'm not going to deny that! :)

I set out to to make something a little different, something unique -- from me -- that I loved and was proud to make. Thank you all for reading my silly little blog and tweets and for supporting me in this new endeavor. You have given me such a lovely dose of self-confidence.

And my prayer is that you too will find a place or someone that gives you that dose of self-confidence every so often.

You can still enter to win $25 off a bag of your choice here. And 10 percent off with the code "launch" at the etsy and storenvy shop. expect new color options and designs in the coming months! and if you have a dream color combo -- let me know in the comments!

11 things & a few more

the husband makes fun of me because he thinks that sometimes I try too hard to be different, to not go along with the crowd.

but look at me husband! I'm participating! ;) (and playing by the rules)

 11 things
1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them that you've tagged them.

eleven random things about moi:

- when I was little I really wanted brown hair or black hair. Anything but red hair. I've gotten over it now.

- my brother puked during my wedding vows. and he was a groomsman.

- although I have red hair, I am not Irish (as most people think). I am Swedish, Norwegien, German and Polish.

- I prefer pie to cake, but I'm a pie snob, and if it's not homemade pie and homemade crust, then I prefer cake to pie.

- I have never been to the East Coast but I've been to Europe.

- I am really afraid of monkeys, apes, primates, whatever. I think they're evil. They are not cute. They are evil and have evil intentions. You cannot convince me otherwise.

-  My husband and I own our house. (so yeah, we're broke.)

- I can read really fast. Like really really fast. It's kinda sick and I try to slow down, but I can't.

- On the flip side, I count on my fingers and use my phone's calculator for most simple math

- When I was in second grade, I wrote horse drama stories. They were like straight-up horse soap operas where the mare would die birthing the foal and then the foal would get stolen by poachers. I wrote an entire series and it was all in pencil on that brown, lined paper from school.

- I crack my neck, my knuckles, my back, my toes... nearly every body part that can be cracked is cracked. I know it's annoying to some people, but I've done extensive research and it does not contribute to arthritis!

questions from my girl leonora:

1. If you could have any super power what would it be and why? Uh fly because then I wouldn't have to take the bus downtown every day. (and attempt to read and get bus sick.)

2. If you HAD to quit your job (or change your college major) and you HAD to pick a different career path what would you do? Once upon a time, I was applying to Fashion Institute in L.A. I actually backed out at the last moment and went to the University of Washington. I don't regret my decision, but I think going into fashion, fashion merchandising, etc, would be an interesting career choice. :)

or I would be a teacher.

3. What was your most embarrassing moment Well shoot-- you had to bring that up, huh? There are WAY too many to remember but I think one of the worst ones was one of first times I was at my boyfriend's (now husband's) parents' house and I overflowed the toilet. Water was running into the hallway and he, his mom, his sister and I were on our hands and knees mopping it up. And his dad was down in the basement where toilet water was seeping through the CEILING. (and yet he still married me...)

4. It's 2012, when you were younger how did you think the world would be by now?
I don't think I ever thought this far into the future... I knew that we wouldn't be like the Jetsons or anything... but I think I thought we would have some people living in space.

5. What is a fear you are trying to work on?
The fear of what others think of me. It honestly doesn't matter if everyone isn't my best friend and it doesn't matter if not everyone likes what I do. I shouldn't be consumed with what others may be thinking of me.

6. Do you remember POGs and if so HOW the HECK did you play?? So I think with POGs you had that big POG -- the slammer -- and you slammed it on a stack of POGs and all the POGs that went flying you got to keep? I'm not sure -- they banned POGs at my school pretty quickly. Also, I can't believe my parents let me spend money on cardboard disks...

7. What talent do you wish you had but lack skills in? (For example I do not have an athletic bone in my body, when I tried to ski I totally ate snow) Shoot. I need some major skills. Math skills, singing  skills... also I would appreciate some graphic design skills a lot.

8. What store can you max out your credit card in? I would normally say anthropologie but everything is so durn expensive, so I'm going to go with Nordstrom because I can get a tiny, tiny bit more bang for my buck. That, and I do love Nordstrom.

9. What was your favorite childhood toy or activity?
I loved playing make-pretend, if that's the term for it. My childhood friend and I spent hours coming up with these elaborate games where we were spies or fairies, and my brother and I played this awesome game every summer where we shipwrecked on a tropical island and had to figure out how to survive.

10. If you could have a 2nd house anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
France. An hour outside of Paris in the Loire Valley. I would have the charm and quiet of the countryside but would be within a short train ride to the culture and history of Paris.

I am tagging a few of my sponsors: Jill of A Ceative Little Mess, Candace of Woodgrain and Gold, Emily of Tales for Karina, Melina of Only a Flight Away, Hailey of BabyBakerLove and Lauren of SequinedSprinkles

and any one else who wants to play along -- just link up in the comments!

happy friday people!

coffee date friday

I just asked my husband a blog question. I had some design- pretty images to blog about or, I asked him, should I do a coffee date post and blog about my week?

"A coffee date-type post," he told me. "People like to hear about your week."

Is that true? I mean, while I do write this blog mainly for me-- I also like you-- the reader-- to enjoy what you see here. So let me know what you like sometime. Maybe I'll take what you say into consideration... ;)

 via

But today we're having coffee, tomorrow I'll share pretty inspiration.

If you'd like tea, that's fine too-- I have lots of good options in the cupboard. I wish I could take you out to coffee and buy you a muffin too, but it turns out that the IRS man wants some extra money from us this year... so the husband and I are trying to cut back wherever we can.

This week has been long. I've had this minor flu-bug that's left me achy and feeling gross-- not enough to really keep me down but enough where I'm not very happy. I get cranky when I don't feel good-- is anyone else like that?

I have to tell you that I'm feeling so inspired lately-- by a lot of things. I'm continuing to work on a project that I want to share-- but part of me is afraid of failure. What if it's not as good as I think? I know that that's not the way to live life, but sometimes I let those little negative voices get to me.

How's your week? And how's your coffee-- or tea-- or glass of wine? Or beer? (no judgement here! I'm totally a beer girl!)

Despite feeling yucky, I'm feeling oh-so grateful that I have a wonderful husband and family and friends who support me so much. Thanks for reading my blog, running to the fabric store, and responding with encouraging texts. You know who you are and you are awesome.

happy friday all. You know it's my favorite day of the week. Enjoy.

p.s. how i could i forget to share some of my internet favorites?

- i just discovered hellocotton.com It's another good way to read and connect with blogs.
- moorea's post has me convinced that neons are pretty great.
- only leonora could write a post about balancing your time that would make me laugh out loud.
- oh my gosh you can search by color on design-seeds.com! And you can slide a little slider to make the color darker or brighter before you search. there goes hours of my time...

currently

I've never had anything but positive feedback on my little blog and for that I am grateful. Thank you. Some days it's a big deal for me to put myself out there-- silly outfits, funny tutorials -- and I get nervous wondering what others think.

But what I remember is that this little blog is first and foremost for me. I love to write, I love to share photos and find an excuse to share pretty photos and little crafts I've made. It's self-indulgent, yes, but a hobby I love. And I hope if you blog, or take photos or sew or cook or fly-fish or whatever, you do it because you love it -- without thinking of what others may think.

today I'm linking up with Chelsey of the Paper Mama for a self-portrait challenge and sharing some little things going on in my world.

Obsessing over…
Downton Abbey. Ohhh so good. I just finished the first season and am just starting the second!

Working on…
a super-top-secret project that may make it into the etsy shop-- or may just stay in my home for me. It involves pretty fabric and teaching myself something new. :)

Thinking about:
someone who is struggling, a dear friend I need to call, and a plan to somehow combine crafting + fundraising.

Anticipating…
the weekend... as always (and creative estates)

Listening to…
Florence + the Machine (still) and the new Ingrid Michaelson album

Eating…
nothing currently, but I did just eat plain yogurt topped with frozen blackberries and flax seed. nom.

Wishing…
I had more time for everything in my head and that I was a morning person and needed less sleep and that my pup was completely healed from surgery.

happy tuesday!

p.s. Notice the fancy specs? They're from Costco. And lately I've been trying to give my eyes a break from contacts and wear glasses. I'm not a huge fan of glasses because I hate the way they feel on my nose. I don't even like sunglasses for this reason. Contacts usually are a win for me.

scarves up!

How do you hide dirty hair?
I was inspired by Busy Bee Lauren to use a vintage scarf as a headband.

And you may not be able to tell, but these photos were taken with the new camera. It came in the mail and the husband and I are still getting used to it. We spent most of last night playing around with it.

Nesby was the subject of most of our shots. :)

he's not always a fan of holding still.

I still have room for sponsors. It's free!

coming to terms with my freckles

I remember when I was about 13. I had just started wearing makeup.

With a tube of coverup, I meticulously went and covered every one of my freckles on my face.

Then applied foundation over. All over.

When I got to school, one of my friends pulled me into the bathroom.

"You're wearing too much foundation," she told me. Handing me the rough, brown paper towel that is a ubitiquous standard at every public school, she instructed me to tissue some off.

I was trying to cover my freckles.

I remember looking at magazines (does anyone remember YM and Seventeen?) and wishing that I had brown, even skin.

Skin that tanned, not freckled.

I don't know when I finally came to term with the dots on my face. But even now I still find myself wishing for a more even complexion.

It wasn't until I stumbled across a blog post on Oh! Mishka where she wrote:

"Oh, how I love
when girls with freckles don't cover them up with makeup!"

And I realized again that maybe my freckles aren't that bad.

Maybe they're even beautiful.

Is there anything about you that you've come to love?

I'd love to hear about it.

p.s. today is the last day to enter the Live Handmade giveaway
p.p.s. Like the photos? My dear friend Chantal took them. Go check out her work at chantalandrea.com. You'll be there for hours. I promise.

what to bring on a trip

Packing for Hawaii looks much better than packing for anywhere else.

Everything is a bright color!

Here are my travel necessities:

   earplugs

a good book (or two or three! I just picked up "The Postmistress." Has anyone read it?)

downloaded podcasts on the ol' iPhone (I'm a TOTAL NERD and love love love "This American Life")

book of crosswords* (I can't do Soduko)

plane snacks like almonds or dried fruit

cash money money--especially quarters. You never know when you'll need a quarter.

a comfy sweatshirt-- planes are always freezing

What do you pack when you go on vacation?

*so I could not think of the name of crossword puzzles and had to describe it to my husband. "It's not a word scramble...it's like Scrabble, they're in newspapers?" Luckily the husband is used to me grasping at words. "Sometimes," he told me, "I think you're so smart you out-think yourself." aw thanks hubby!

p.s. Please note that all orders placed in my shop from June 28 (today) through July 6th will not ship out until July 8th. Thanks for your understanding! :)

let's pretend...

Let's pretend today's Monday and I'm not that behind. I had this post all written in my head but then life got in the way. (That happens sometimes, huh?)

This weekend was filled with family and friends.

Friday night was my dear friend's bridal shower.

We giggled and ate, giggled and ate some more. (I could go for some of those chocolate covered strawberries right about now...)

Saturday I went up to Bellingham with the family for my other brother's college graduation.

It was a beautiful day.

I need to buy a kite.

My mom says we're special

Hands down though, the best part of the weekend was a quick jont to an incredible antiques store. But that's a whole 'nother post...

What did you do this weekend? Anyone else go to graduations?

it's a dog's life [at the beach]

As I mentioned earlier, it's finally warmed up around here so the doggy and I headed to Richmond Beach, a few miles north of us in the city of Shoreline (north suburb of Seattle.)

What's great about this beach is unlike Seattle beaches, doggies are allowed. And if you walk far enough past the main beach, there's an area where dogs can roam off leash.

My little guy loved it.

It was lovely to just do nothing but walk the beach with the little pup, listening to the waves. Only ten minutes from my house but it felt like a million miles away.

[Lately I've been discouraged. Just with the market, my blog... lots of things. I love my blog, I love what I make but sometimes it's easy to let the little voices in my head dictate how I feel. Do you know what I'm talking about? Spending time at the beach was mini-therapy for me.]

If you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, just stare into that last photo and imagine you're there. (it's working for me.)

how do you relieve stress in your life?

tuesday tutorial: how to be sick on a sunny day

I hate being sick.
I'm not good at it. I keep thinking of all the things I could be doing with a day home from work.

It's especially frustrating when it's gorgeous outside and the perfect weather is tempting me to do anything but lay around.

So I decided yesterday that I can have my cake and eat it too. Thus, my easy guide to enjoying the sunshine while home sick.

Step one: Find the old jean quilt the husband's grandma made way back when, complete with acid-washed jean pockets and cotton sports printed fabric. (ignore pasty, unshaven legs.)

Step two: Lay out the quilt. Get a fuzzy friend to hang out with you. (optional)

Step three: Pour yourself a ginormous glass of OJ or water because your mom would want you to.

Step four: Don't forget your phone. Someone may call you and feel sorry for you. A good book is also a great outdoor sick buddy.

Step five: Snuggle and sleep. Repeat. Get better.

little getaway to a place i've never been

I've never been to Portland, Oregon.

And I'm sure that a lot of people have never been there, but I only live three hours away. I grew up three hours away.

But let me retract that.

I've never been been to Portland. Does that make sense?

I've driven through it countless times-- on the way to the Oregon Coast, on the way to Mt. Bachelor for skiing, and most often, in the back of an Astro van on the way to California.

Quick side story: My parents moved to Washington state when my mom was pregnant with me. Every year after I was born, we went down to California (usually twice a year) to visit extended family. And we never flew.

Never.

I didn't get on a plane until I was 14.

Up until then, we drove to California to see the relatives-- my two brothers and I in the back of a gray Astro van bombing down I-5.

My mom says she's blocked most of those trips out. At least the traveling part.

But back to my story. Portland was the city we drove through, peering through windows at the sprawled skyline just on the other side of the river from Washington. But we never stopped.

On Friday the husband and I are taking a belated birthday trip down and I can not be more excited.

Everyone is telling me what it's like.

"It's like Seattle, but more hipster," several people explained.

"Just go in a bar and look around," one of my friends told me. "Every guy will have a mustache and be wearing plaid."

your typical hipster (yes I just googled hipster)
[source]

I think they've been watching too much Portlandia, the comedy show about Portland.

All I know is that we're staying in a new hotel within walking distance of a Saturday farmers market.

The city has tons of little food trucks with delicious, cheap food.

foooooood trucks calling my name
[source]
There's no sales tax.

And we're taking the train to get there. (Another thing I've never done.)

Anyone from Portland or has gone to Portland? What do I need to see? Where should I eat?

All suggestions welcome.

also, mom, if you're reading this, check here for the definition of hipster.

suffer for beauty

Suffer for beauty.

Did anyone ever tell you that growing up?
I had an aunt who would pull my hair back so tight that my eyebrows stretched to my hairline, giving me a perpetually surprised look. If I had the audacity to complain, she would simply tell me, "Erika, didn't you know? You must suffer for beauty."

I generally don't like to follow this mantra but yesterday I did it by accident.  See I splurged on these cute high-waisted trousers but they require heels. So I wore my (semi-new) cute nude patent heels (thank you Marshalls) to work.

a torture device innocently disguised as the perfect nude pump.
Honestly I think my feet grew. Or the sexy little suckers shrunk. I now am the proud owner of four nasty blisters-- the kind that throb with a heartbeat all their own. I'd take pictures to show you but, well, I'd like to encourage the use of your imagination.

It didn't help that I hoofed it several blocks to meet with a potential custom accessory client. She was sweet and well-worth it but by the time I got back to the day job the dogs were not just barking. They were all-out howling.

So much for beauty. I'm pretty sure it's not beautiful, no matter how cute your shoes are, to limp to the bus stop.

I'm not sure I'm at the Working Girl phase yet (wearing tennis shoes with the work outfit while commuting) but there has got to be a better option.

Anyone have suggestions for comfy but CUTE high heels?
