chop suey

Did you know that chop suey means odds and ends in Chinese?

So that is what this post about... odds and ends... and a random craving for Chinese food. (However, I do prefer Thai food to Chinese food-- jus' saying.)

Do you guys plan your outfits in the morning or at night? This girl here is NOT a morning person. Actually, for the longest time, the husband thought I was mad at him every morning... then he just realized I'm just "not friendly" in the morning.

It's not that I'm not friendly-- I just can't speak before I've had some time to adjust to being vertical rather than horizontal. (Coffee speeds up the process.)

Anyway, this means I lay my clothes out at night. Or plan my outfit at night. Honestly, and we're being real honest here, I get a nerdy sort of pleasure of staring at my closet, imagining outfits before bed.

Luckily the husband lays out clothes too so he doesn't think I'm too weird -- but usually that just means he lays out running clothes and a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. The husband wears the same thing everyday, (which is another post for another day.)

This morning I put on the outfit I had planned but then I second-guessed the belt.

Bright red? Really? Does it work?

And I decided yes, yes it does work. It makes me happy and if it makes me happy, it works.

Also -- random confession -- sometimes I tuck my shirt into the waistpant of my underwear so it doesn't creep up on me. I find it to be a much more secure tucking-in option. My mom taught it to me. And I'm sure some of you guys do it too -- but you wouldn't admit that on the Internet, would you?

So it's funny but it's the second week in a row where my little interview is with someone I've met in real life. Real life-- isn't that a funny thing to say-- as in this blog is not real life.

But you guys know what I mean-- Paige and I met outside of typing or skyping or texting. Real face to face life. (shoot-- it sounds like I play a virtual reality game.)

We went to the same college for undergrad-- University of Washington (go dawgs) -- and she is good friends with a friend of mine!

I am a graduate student, who loves to craft and create things! I love bright colors and the idea of making something from nothing, or making something old beautiful.

How did you get started blogging and with your shop?

I started blogging to increase advertising for my shop, and I started my shop because I had built up quite the collection of crafted items that I needed to "get rid of."

What does the "average" day look like for you?

I either have class or work... or both - so as of lately I don't have very much free time... which is unfortunate because I want to work on my shop and blog but just don't have any time.

If any celebrity could own one of your products-- what would it be-- and who would it go to-- and why?

Zooey Deschanel, because she is too cute (totally agree) and would look adorable in some of my bows! That or Rachel Berry on Glee - ditto on the bows.

What is your favorite way to relax?

A glass of wine or a beer, and a movie in my sweats :)

color crush: mint

I've always loved turquoise. And aqua. And in high school and early college I wore it all the time, to the point where I think I overdosed a bit on the color. But I'm ready for a revisit-- especially in a fresh, soft version of the color. Mint is a delicious option-- lighter, softer, and delicious-- like my favorite ice cream flavor.

coffee date friday

I just asked my husband a blog question. I had some design- pretty images to blog about or, I asked him, should I do a coffee date post and blog about my week?

"A coffee date-type post," he told me. "People like to hear about your week."

Is that true? I mean, while I do write this blog mainly for me-- I also like you-- the reader-- to enjoy what you see here. So let me know what you like sometime. Maybe I'll take what you say into consideration... ;)

But today we're having coffee, tomorrow I'll share pretty inspiration.

If you'd like tea, that's fine too-- I have lots of good options in the cupboard. I wish I could take you out to coffee and buy you a muffin too, but it turns out that the IRS man wants some extra money from us this year... so the husband and I are trying to cut back wherever we can.

This week has been long. I've had this minor flu-bug that's left me achy and feeling gross-- not enough to really keep me down but enough where I'm not very happy. I get cranky when I don't feel good-- is anyone else like that?

I have to tell you that I'm feeling so inspired lately-- by a lot of things. I'm continuing to work on a project that I want to share-- but part of me is afraid of failure. What if it's not as good as I think? I know that that's not the way to live life, but sometimes I let those little negative voices get to me.

How's your week? And how's your coffee-- or tea-- or glass of wine? Or beer? (no judgement here! I'm totally a beer girl!)

Despite feeling yucky, I'm feeling oh-so grateful that I have a wonderful husband and family and friends who support me so much. Thanks for reading my blog, running to the fabric store, and responding with encouraging texts. You know who you are and you are awesome.

How did your blog and shop get started?

I started blogging when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I wanted to document our journey so I could someday share it with her. From there the blog grew, as our family grew to a blog about our life, love, journey and faith. My shop started a couple years later. I had taught myself how to sew when I was pregnant and what began as sewing gifts grew into a small business called Rags to Stitches Boutique. Currently you'll find me making Snuggies to keep your favorite electronics warm and snuggly.

You are obviously an accomplished sewer-- how long have you been sewing and what's the hardest thing you've ever sewn?

I would call myself an accomplished sewer per say. hehe But I think the hardest thing I've ever sewn was a dress for myself. I'd share the picture with you but well.... it doesn't fit anymore. hahaha

What does the "average" day look like for you? (And I know that there are probably no average days for you or anyone!)

Well, you're right, I'd love an "average" day. On a typical day you'll find me snoozing till the last possible moment to savor every extra minute of sleep I can before the morning rush begins. We get up, eat, get ready and we're usually out the door to Disneyland, play dates, preschool, gymnastics, dance or swim lessons. phew and that's all before lunch most days. Then it's home for lunch and nap time. I'm a huge fan of nap time, it's when I get my emails returned, blog posts written and sewing done. Then after naps, we snack, play, make dinner, and get ready for bed. Once bed time rolls around the hubs and I play catch up from our day, work on our computers a little and head to bed. Boy, writing that down sure makes me sound boring huh? haha (nope! not at all!)

If any celebrity could own one of your products-- who would it be, and why?

Ummm I would say Ellen DeGeneres. I love, love, love her and I would pretty much buy any product she endorsed so I'd love it if she'd endorse mine. :)

So I'm considering a swap to Store Envy-- as a Stove Envy shop owner-- sell me on their awesomeness in two sentences. :)

Hmmm, I would tell you that Storenvy is a great online storefront for people who really want to start a handmade business or have a handmade business and are tired of paying all those extra listing and transaction fees. Also, they have amazing customer service, which in my book, is a total plus!!

What is your favorite way to relax?

I love being pampered. So my idea relaxation day would be a mani/pedi, followed by a massage. Oh and can I have a Starbucks with that? ;)

what i got for $2.99

I mentioned last week that I had one of the best thrifting experiences of my life recently with Carina. This wasn't just because of the great company, but because I snagged a leopard shirt for $2.99.

Leopard is a little scary. I've had a pair of leopard flats for ever... and when I say forever, I mean I love the style so much, that I bought a new pair of the exact same style last year. But leopard as a shirt seems a little intense. But a cropped, under $3 version just seemed perfect.

And it turns out the shirt is even more perfect because it looks very similar very similar to a leopard shirt at anthropologie priced significantly higher. Even I can tell that it's at least 5 times more expensive... and I'm terrible at math. (Like count-on-my-fingers terrible.)

some fashion rules are made to be broken like white after labor day and mixing brown with black.

But one rule I'm really having a hard time adjusting to...

That, for as long as I can remember, was the biggest fashion don't. It's akin to wearing a denim tuxedo ala Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake circa 1999.

In college there was a guy who wore a jean jacket with jeans and we always told him that he couldn't do that. It wasn't allowed. (Jon, I'm sorry for being so hard on you about that.)

And of course now I see people rock jean on jean like this:

trends: color-blocking

One of my favorite trends right now is color-blocking or pairing two or more solid colors together in an outfit.

Mixing prints may be challenging, but mixing bright solid colors is sometimes even more difficult.

A few weeks ago I tried color-blocking for the first time and got a few questions from some of you on how to do it in your own closet. I'm no expert, but here's a few tips:

1. pick colors either next to each other or on the opposite side on the color wheel. (for example: pink and orange or blue and orange.)

2. pick colors in similar shades-- i.e. don't mix pastels with brights.

3. balance the look with neutral accessories

Here I chose to mix magenta and orange in similar shades:

And my last tip-- have fun-- play around!

And if you don't feel like you can color block something in your closet, there's always the option of buying something that's already color-blocked for you:

friday coffee date

hi friends.

if we were on a coffee date, we wouldn't go to starbucks. we probably would sit in my kitchen and the coffee I made you wouldn't look like the photo above. I'd probably just offer you some milk and maybe some sugar, if you would like it.

I'd tell you that I drink coffee every day and that first sip is one of my favorite things ever. I'd tell you that my work has this fancy espresso machine so I usually just drink my coffee there in front of my computer but I relish weekends when I make it at home.

I'd tell you that I am so excited for my blog, for my shop-- that I have so many ideas and a huge project I'm working on, but sometimes I feel like I have so little time.

I'd also tell you that I feel so grateful that we're talking and that I have people that have been encouraging me. I'd tell you that I am so blessed to have a husband who is one of my biggest cheerleaders.

I'd tell you that I want a clean house but I'm not always sure how to balance everything. Leaning across the table, I'd whisper that my vaccuum doesn't work and hasn't worked for awhile.

Then I'd feel old and boring because we were talking about vaccuums. So I would ask how you were doing-- what you were excited about.

We'd probably have a second cup. My dog would beg for attention and I'd have to reach down and scratch his ears. I'd tell you that I never thought I'd be one of those crazy pet parents... but that I probably am one.

I'd confess some weird things about me-- that I recycle and compost with conviction (so Seattle)-- that my thighs are super sore from working out yesterday-- and that I've been wanting to bake cherry pie.

what I've learned from 5 year olds

Nearly every Sunday I drag myself out of bed and drive over to my church where I teach sunday school to a group of energetic five and six-year-old girls.

What's brilliant about my church is that they seperate the boys from the girls so while the girls and I are coloring, the boys are wrestling.

Although, more often than not, a few of my darling girls decide that wrestling and chasing is for them too.

When I started teaching, I wasn't too sure what to expect. The lessons are all planned, so I just show up and guide the activities, which depending on the day and the girls present, can be incredibly easy or incredibly difficult.

It's just an hour of time-- give or take a few minutes-- and in that time we talk about a lot and I hear a lot about the girls' fears, excitements and goals.

What is amazing about these girls is that many of them are very sure of who they are and what they want to be.

One sweet girl named Norah tells me every week that she's an artist. She says it so matter-of-factly. Last week she told her dad made her an art studio-- a little place just for her to do her art.

"It has an easel and a curtain for privacy," she tells me.

While I love hearing her tell me that she's an artist every week, I fear for the day when she'll question herself or the day someone tells her that her art isn't as good as she thinks. Because those days happen-- they happen to all of us. Then we suddenly decide that we aren't artists, or singers or fire fighters anymore. That was just something we thought when we were little kids.

Teaching these five-year-olds each week reminds me that I, like so many others, am too quick to give up on my goals and my dreams. What if I still was five and could tell people with conviction who I was?

My goal for me this year is to live life more like a five-year-old. I want to be like Norah and tell people with absolute conviction who I am.

crossing off my thrift list

I posted about my thrift list in November and I'm happy to say that after months of searching, I've picked up both two silky blouses (one in off-white and one in turquoise) and my big win, a denim button-up.

I had almost given up hopes on the denim shirt. Urban Outfitters was tempting me with their version and someone at work picked one up at Forever 21.

And then I received the anthropologie catalog which teased me more with a photo of a girl rocking a denim shirt on the cover. I almost bolted for the mall right then and there.

But I was bound and determined, which paid off when I picked up a denim button up Saturday for $3.99. I'm pretty dang proud of myself and finding it in the rack of clothes at the St. Vincent de Paul's was so satisfactory after the months of hunting -- I may have jumped up and down.

My first time wearing it, I had to take a little bit of inspiration from anthropologie.

home tour: the turquoise dresser & guest room

some of you have asked what room I've been occasionally taking photos in.

I finally cleaned just so you guys could have a little peek at where I sew (and sometimes take pretty photos.)

Step on in! Do you spot pieces from the paper mama shop and yellow heart art hanging on the wall?

The dresser was a thrift find that my mom painted for me. :)

Craigslist chair, thrifted mini shelves and suitcases. The trunk is a family heirloom.

On the shelves is my husband's sports collection from childhood -- on the bottom shelf are boxes and binders full of cards. The tops shelves have bobbleheads, figurines and books. The random Barbie is vintage from my Grandma.

The sewing machine is a Janome I got on Craigslist for $40. Which is amazing.

The desk is also a thrifted find, painted by my mom. The pendant light is my mom's design-- she thrifted the frame, then bought a lamp kit and had my dad put it together.

I found the chair on the side of the road and painted it & recovered the cushion.

The white chest holds fabric and was another thrifted find.

I love my print from Mary Kate McDevitt-- my husband got it for me and it's often my mantra cuz I really do love to get things done! (but what I haven't done is find a frame for it...)

The typewriter and vintage cameras were Christmas gifts from my parents-- they found them in an antique shop near my Grandma's house in California.

Could you get the theme from the room? Nearly everything is thrifted or from Craislist. While it takes time to put together a room like this, I love the character and stories behind each piece.

I also can't take a lot of credit for this room. As an interior designer, my mom is a devoted thrift shopper and Craigslist browser and she picks up a lot of great stuff for me. (You can read about her job here.)

I'm not going to lie to you-- I cleaned this room Saturday but I already have fabric strewn everywhere again as I've working hard to add some new stuff to the shop. (I hope you will be as excited about as I am about the new products!)

I met Carina of the blog a punk, a pumpkin and a peanut on Saturday to go to my favorite Goodwill. It's about a half-hour drive for me, but it's SO worth it because it's enormous and affordable.

Carina & I talked family, adopting, blogging, sewing and thrifting. It was a gorgeous Saturday and we had the BEST luck-- including finding anthropologie mugs (with their price tags still on) for $1.99.

I love weekends.

But what I don't love is that my washer decided to stop working. Lately I feel like a lot of appliances have turned against me: my vaccuum hasn't been working, there's something up with the car and now the washer. bleh.

at least with the washer it's an excuse to not do laundry. (my least favorite of all chores.)

why haven't they invented a washing machine that folds too?

beautiful revolution

There was a time, once upon a time, that I didn't leave the house without makeup.

There was a time when I put on coverup and mascara to go to my college gym.

There was a time when I was consumed by looking "put-together."

My sophomore year of college, a few friends and I issued a challenge... No Makeup March in which we could not wear anything-- not even colored lipgloss-- for an entire month.

To some of you, this is no big deal. But to me-- the girl wearing mascara and running at the gym-- this was a huge challenge. I didn't feel pretty without makeup and to go an entire month was ludicrous.

Yet, I took the challenge and for one month, I washed and dried my face and left for the day.

At the end of the month I was completely changed. While I was excited about wearing makeup (and especially covering zits) I realized that no one thought less of me because I wasn't all "made up." I realized I didn't need to have mascara on at the gym. I realized that I could be beautiful without it.

I bring all this up because as a woman, I am constantly bombarded by advertisements to get the latest product, images of women perfectly airbrushed and fit and I begin to believe that I need to look like that. I begin to believe that I am not good enough and I stop loving myself as much.

I bring this up because February -- the month of love -- is the perfect time to embrace imperfection and remember the importance of loving myself -- with makeup or without.

Sometimes I go through phases where I need to purge. I get a huge bag and stuff clothes, shoes and whatever else shows up in my path.

Usually I don't regret it, but occasionally, just sometimes, I'll regret getting rid of something.

And sometimes I'll be so glad I kept something like a jean jacket.

I bought this jean jacket in high school. I wore it with my flared khaki pants (so hot) and a favorite tee. Sometimes I'd spice it up and layer a thin hoodie underneath. (anyone else do that?)

Even though years have passed and I haven't worn it in years... it survived high school graduation, college graduation, getting married and countless closet purges. And I'm so glad.

18-year-old me was real cute, huh?

I've never had anything but positive feedback on my little blog and for that I am grateful. Thank you. Some days it's a big deal for me to put myself out there-- silly outfits, funny tutorials -- and I get nervous wondering what others think.

But what I remember is that this little blog is first and foremost for me. I love to write, I love to share photos and find an excuse to share pretty photos and little crafts I've made. It's self-indulgent, yes, but a hobby I love. And I hope if you blog, or take photos or sew or cook or fly-fish or whatever, you do it because you love it -- without thinking of what others may think.

And well, I kinda love answering questions.

So I obliged.

1. Three words that describe you.

Crazy. Happy. Funny

2. How did you get started blogging?

Great question.

I'm not really sure other than one random day I started a Blogger account.

I wrote my first post on February 1st, 2011 and the rest is history.

I was bored {heck, it was winter..} and had nothing better to do.

Now it is my favorite thing to do :)

3. How do you explain your blog to other people (like non-bloggy people?)

I try not to.

I just tell them they will have to read it to figure out what it is I write about ;)

It works every time.

And if they demand-I tell them I talk about my digestive system.

Then it really intrigues them.

4. What's the best--and hardest-- thing about blogging?

The best for me is that this whole blog of mine is a creative outlet.

It is something of my own--I create it--I write it--it's all mine.

The even better part though?

Creating the awesome relationships that I have.

I love people, so getting to know people from all over the place has been such a blessing.

The hardest?

TIME.

Blogging takes a lot more time than I ever imagined.

It is much more than writing a post here and then.

It is networking, emailing, editing pictures, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

5. Most embarrassing moment..

I don't have a "most" embarrassing moment.

I think it is because I have embarrassing moments happen weekly.

In fact, I don't even consider them embarrassing anymore.

One time I accidentally told a stranger I was nervous about what fiber would do to my digestive system.

I also fell down a huge flight of stairs once in Mexico and landed at the feet of a donkey & mariachi band.

That was interesting.

6. How did you develop your writing voice?

Did you just start writing and decide to be humorous and light-hearted or did it just happen?

Girlfriend, you have a lot of good questions here.

I developed my writing voice through sending entirely way too many emails at work

to co-workers, friends, and my husband.

I write my blog like I write those emails-humorous, honest, and like I'm talking directly to you.

I guess I just think funny is fun.

And I'm all about fun.

7. Quick-- you have this amazing opportunity from Donald Trump, or Oprah, or Bill Gates (someone rich) to get mega bank to blog--

but you have to convince them your blog is worthy of the cash.

What do you say?

I think this goes back to question number 3.

I would tell them that my blog is awesome because I talk about bowel movements.

That's sure to land me some cash money right?

8. Any advice for newbie (and not so newbie) bloggers?

Do it because you love it.

Only write about what you want to write about.

Don't try to imitate somebody else-people will see right through it.

Be yourself.

Have fun :)

I've fallen hard for color-blocking.

color-blocking- verb- the act of pairing unusual colors or colors in the same family, like I did here with teal & kelly green.

I went safe with a white tee, but I hope to get more daring later on.

tuesday tutorial: blazer redo

Last week I asked you if I should keep a blazer.

I made some updates which is going to have me ask...

I added floral cuffs and better buttons in a quick evening.

I measured around my cuff and cut out a piece of fabric with additional 1 inch at the end and tops. I then went to my iron (your best friend in sewing!) and ironed the fabric over 1 inch all the way around.

Returned to the blazer, I rolled the cuffs up evenly on each side to my desired height and pinned my fabric around the outside of the rolled cuff.

I sewed around just the bottom of the rolled cuff and then down one seam, which was just enough to keep the rolled cuff in position.

I also added prettier buttons to replace the yucky plastic blue buttons. (What were they thinking?)

My tips:
- use similar fabric as your blazer. My blazer is polyester, my cuffs are a decor-weight cotton. Not a great pairing and this made sewing and matching seams difficult.

- pin, pin, pin and iron, iron, iron! This will help the cuff look crisp and seams match up easier.

So whatcha think? Keep it blue?

Sometimes every day needs to be made a little more special. You get into this daily grind-- getting up, going to work, drinking that same cup of coffee, making the same sandwich for lunch, coming home and going through the same routine before going to bed. And then it starts all over again.

Sometimes you need to do something a little more fun.

I haven't made a fort in years (I actually made "study forts all the time in college) and so I decided it was high time to make one for the husband and me.

And what's a better fort than one made of vintage sheets? Especially one with a bottle of red wine inside.

of course the doggie thought the fort was for him.

deep snow & doggie distress

Seattle has become a winter wonderland.

sweater: American Eagle forevers ago plaid shirt: Banana Republic jeans: F21 shoes: Wanted booties covered in snow

But perhaps some people would not use the word wonderland. Unlike other cities that see snow almost all winter, it only snows once or twice here and barely any more than an inch or two. (I only own three legitimate sweaters for this reason.)

Well until recently. Seattle was hit with a storm that dumped 6 inches in our neighborhood and 10 to 12 inches elsewhere. Add in some ice, steep hills and only a few snow plows and the city shuts down-- completely.

I know other states are secretly laughing at us. And I'm thinking I need more sweaters.

(SIDE NOTE: I have a serious question for people who live in very cold climates... how do you deal with really cold weather? I'm freezing and it's 28 degrees! I can't imagine 10 degrees, or heaven forbid, -3. Do your eyes freeze? These may be silly questions, but I'm honestly very ignorant about this.)

Also, the doggie went in for a little surgery this week and he's wearing a cone of shame and generally feeling miserable, which makes me feel miserable.

Happy Thursday everyone! Today I have a little treat for you-- an interview with the impossibly sweet Megan of the wonderful blog Here's to You, Mrs. Robinson. (and if you're interested-- she interviewed me over on her blog!)

How would your friends describe you?

My husband said cute, outgoing, friendly, and talkative. But he was just trying to answer the question quickly so.... I don't know how accurate those descriptions are, haha :)

How long have you been married? How long have you been a mom? Is it as hard as I think it is to be a mom? (haha)

I have been married for a little over 2 1/2 years. We were married in May 2010 and found I was pregnant in August 2010. Needless to say, it was a huge shock and we did not exactly plan to have children that soon. We were both still in school (I recently graduated and my husband is continuing on with graduate school) and it was hard to 1. be pregnant {and sick} and be going to school full-time and working, and 2. to have a newborn and be going to school and working on an internship with StrongerMarriage.org. Because my first year of motherhood was so busy with outside stuff and my second year is filled with the challenging toddler stage, I think my opinion about motherhood being hard might be slightly skewed from my own personal experiences. My first gut, honest reaction is "Yes, motherhood is very hard. Harder than you might expect it to be," just because of the circumstances that we were faced with. However, if I really reflect on my deeper, personal feelings about motherhood, it is also completely and utterly worth it!! I never knew I could love a tiny human being as much as I love my son. And although the timing may have been more difficult than I would have liked, I wouldn't have had it any other way!

How did you start blogging?

I actually set up my blog back in 2007 when I was a sophomore in college to have a place to write down all the crazy, funny stories of my roommate and I and keep in touch with friends and family who were spread out across the country. It's actually pretty funny to go back and read some of my first entries {I was rather hilarious if I do say so myself}. But after getting married and having my son, I realized that I had learned some important life lessons that I felt like I needed to share with others. So in June of 2011 I started reaching out to others more and I found a wonderful community of friendship and support that I never knew existed. And I've been sharing my heart ever since! :)

I don't if they are secret really.... But if I put my mind to it {and stay motivated} I can be pretty crafty at times. I also play the piano, violin, harp, and sing {or I did... I am since out of practice}. And I can do a pretty mean impression of the Target Lady from SNL.

If you could live anywhere... where would you live?

I really want to be some kind of writer and write to inspire women, couples, and families. It's kind of a big dream but I feel like I can slowly but surely accomplish it. But my more realistic dream is to be able to continue to hold on to and understand true happiness and be able to look back on my life and feel love and satisfaction in my works.

Please share your most embarrassing moment.

Oh goodness.... This story still makes my face hot with embarrassment! In junior high {the most awkward of ages} I was doing a simple weight lifting demonstration for the school's open house. I had to perform in the choir later so I didn't want to change out of my jeans cause I was basically lazy. I didn't think it would be that big of deal though anyways. Well, it turned out it was a very big deal and I ended up ripping my jeans allllll the way up the rear in front of a BIG group of parents and students with a group of boys right behind me AND the school's little news camera was filming me at the time!! Some lady said very loud, "OH MY GOSH, SHE RIPPED HER PANTS!!" Then my friends looked over, dropped each of their weights and started laughing hysterically. I, on the other hand, started crying and couldn't face the rest of school again for my choir performance and just left in tears. I couldn't talk about it for years. Literally. It has scarred me for life. (totally understand-- junior high is the WORST for embarrassments!)

What's better-- cake or pie?

Can I say cupcakes?? I LOVE cupcakes!

Do you believe in New Years resolutions? Do you have any?

Yes! I definitely believe in using the New Year as a great way to get pumped and try hard to become a better version of yourself in the following year. But, I also think that means setting meaningful, simple, realistic goals for resolutions that will bring a positive change in your life. My goals for this year is based off of this article to have an abundant life. They are: accepting myself and my circumstances to make the most of the situation, believing in myself and that I can accomplish the goals I set, and having courage and strength to push forward through trials.

confessions of a book nerd

I would huddle under the covers with a flashlight, a book clutched in my hands and read until the wee hours of the morning.

I was 12 years old and I would never admit to anyone how much I loved to read.

And I would never admit how fast I read. When we had to read something in class, I read it three or four times before I looked up and acted like I was done.

Through high school, when others complained about the books they read, I complained along with them even though I secretly relished the literature we were assigned.

When Facebook began, I was in college and I dared to not list "reading" under my favorite activities... even though it was.

But now, I'm owning it. I love to read. I devour books the way some people devour dessert. I'll stay up until 3 a.m. if the book is good enough. I joined Good Reads and spent over an hour rating my favorite books.

I am that person. I am a book nerd.

But what I love is realizing that so much of the blog community are book nerds too. You guys are my people. You tweet about books you've read, you blog about the books you love. I have found my people.

And fellow book nerds-- I have some suggestions for you to read, but I'd love for you to tell me what you love to read... and if you're on Goodreads, find me there too.

What are three words to describe you?

How did you start blogging?

I started blogging about a year ago when a friend of mine who also has a jewelry business told me that she had just started a blog and that I should too! She told me I would love it, but I must be honest, I never thought I would love it this much! So it originally started as a way to promote my handmade business and has grown so much. It continues to amaze me how many incredible people I've met in the blogging world and how much I truly enjoy sharing little bits and pieces of my life with the world. It's turned into so much more than I ever thought it would.

What are some of your favorite blog posts and topics?

I love to post about things that are on my heart. I don't really have a blog schedule. I have different topics that I seem to focus on like fashion, handmade projects, a little cooking here and there and that sort of thing, but most of my blog tends to just be whatever comes to mind, whatever is on my heart at the moment.

I'm quite a handy woman with power tools... you would never expect that from this fashionista! (Lindsay-- please teach me power tool skillz! Blog post tutorial?)

If you could live anywhere-- where would it be?

I spent a semester in Genoa, Italy and it was probably one of the best 6 months of my life. If I could live anywhere in the world, I would probably go back to somewhere in Italy. I just love the slightly slower pace of life, the emphasis on family, the beautiful scenery, and the incredibly delicious food... mmm so fresh! (amen for slower pace of life!!)

What are your dreams for the future?

My dreams change and grow every single day. I'm currently getting my masters in architecture and have 3 semesters left and gahh I just had a moment last week where I was like what am I going to do with the rest of my life?? My dream job would be something in the design world. I have a passion for design in general, not just architecture. I love everything about it. Then of course having a pretty little house to decorate and finding and marrying the man of my dreams.

Your most embarrassing moment?

How do I even just pick one? Let's just say I'm pretty much the clumsiest person ever!! I'm constantly tripping up stairs and hopping up to look around to make sure no one is looking. Just a few months ago, I was out for my morning run and yep, I tripped, face planted on the sidewalk and had to walk home with a bloody knee. I got lots of great looks. That's for sure.

And, finally -- a very important question-- what's better, cake or pie?

Cake for sure!! especially if it's my grandma's peanut butter chocolate cake... yummmm

your [fashion] opinion

I bought a blazer on a whim at a thrift store.

The fit was right.

The style was right.

But I am not so sure about the color.

Since it was only $4.99, I brought it home but I have yet to wear it anywhere and I've decided I need a second, third and maybe fourth opinion on it. So I'm asking you guys.

Do I keep it? Do I dye it? (I've always wanted to try dying fabric.) I already have plans to customize the sleeves with floral fabric and add better buttons but my question is whether that will be enough... I'm afraid the color is a little... uh grandma... if you get my drift.

Your honesty is appreciated! :)

DIY sheet curtains

I love vintage sheets and I have quite a few laying around-- just waiting for projects. I decided that I finally needed to do something with some of them and so this past weekend I made a little curtain for my kitchen window.

You need:
- vintage sheet
- sewing machine (or thread and needle)
- iron
- measuring tape/ruler
- scissors
- curtain rod

take measurements-- make sure you take note of the width of your curtain rod. If it's one-inch, I'd suggest sewing a two-inch hem to feed the rod through.

pick your fabric-- I chose a sheet that had a wide hem already sewn-- perfect to fit my curtain through

measure and cut-- making sure to include one inch at the bottom and sides for the hem, as well as your two inches at the top for the rod (if not already including in the sheet.)

fold over one-inch around the remaining edges of the sheet, ironing and pinning as you go. If your sheet does not have a hem at the top, fold over a two-inch piece of fabric. This is where you will feed the curtain rod through.

sew the hem down, making sure to leave openings at the edge of the top hem so you can fit the curtain rod in.

hang your curtain! I used a really thin rod -- only $2.99 at my local hardware store!

I love the final product and can't wait to make more things with my stack of vintage sheets. :)

my little guy

I've blogged before how my little dog Nesby is endless energy and joy -- everything to him is exciting and new.

But on Sunday my little guy came up lame when he played a little too hard. He can't put any weight on his back left leg and the vet thinks he may have torn his little doggie ACL.

It's so hard to deal with an injured animal or kid-- they don't understand why they're hurting, why they're supposed to lay low. And getting Nesby to lay low is proving near impossible. He still runs around the house, he's only a little slower with three legs going instead of four.

We'll find out for sure what's wrong with him on Wednesday and if you don't think it's too weird to pray for our doggie, I'd appreciate it. Any sort of torn anything will be painful and possibly expensive if we decide to go through with surgery.

five things friday: books, kale and the puppy

My week, although I had Monday off, seemed long. Apparently getting back into the swing of things after the holidays is rough-- even if you work between Christmas and New Years.

But a few good things kept me going this week..

1. I'm a total book nerd and I'm one of those people who will get caught up in a book and read until midnight. The Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers is one of those books. (I also joined goodreads.com-- find me there!)

2. a bridal shower sunday with dear friends and lots of food.

3. eating healthy and cooking brussel sprouts for the first time! I'm on a major veggie kick right now and made kale pesto and a kale smoothie. nom.

4. chill evening at home with the puppy, trashy tv (The Bachelor) and wearing sweatpants.

5. finding lefse at the grocery store! I'm one-quarter Norwegian and I grew up eating lefse for breakfast. It's a flat bread made of potatoes and I love it rolled it with with butter, sugar and cinnamon.

five things I loved from the internet this week.

1. this cracks me up. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I think it's hilarious. (warning- you need your volume up for this one)

2. this blog post about seattle is brilliant.

3. the beauty of slower (and steady) business growth by acute designs

4. glitter shoe diy on a beautiful mess. swoon.

diy doily banner

what do you do when your mom hands you a bag of vintage doilies?

I could not, would not get rid of them but sticking them on the back of my couch or under various items in my living room seemed a bit out of the question. Instead I made a darling doily banner on one rainy Sunday afternoon.

Gather your supplies, including your doilies. Mine were crocheted by my great-grandmother.
Other supplies needed:

scissors
sewing machine or needle and thread
ribbon
fabric glue and/or straight pins

cut the doilies in half.

arrange the doilies and ribbon to how you like, cut the ribbon to length.

using fabric glue or pins, temporarily attach the ribbon to the tops of the doilies. It's okay if a little doily pokes out above the ribbon; you can trim that later.

Sew the ribbon onto the doilies and display your doily banner somewhere pretty!

I still have quite a few doilies left that I want to display somehow. Does anyone else have ideas?

green or blue?

Green or blue?

This was the question I posed to my friend in a text message.

I was standing in Urban Outfitters, two pairs of denim in my hand: bright blue and bright green. She didn't answer so I texted the husband.

I don't usually ask the husband for fashion advice, not because I don't value his opinion, but because he and I really differ when it comes to clothing.

He asks me if my jacket is too small when I wear my cropped, 3/4 sleeve blazer.

Before we were married, he thought that the difference between a dress and a skirt was that a dress was a "fancy version of a skirt."

I'm not saying this to make fun of him, but just to give some background to why I felt hestitant in asking his opinion.

When I wandered into Urban for their denim sale, I was going to buy bright blue jeans. Simple-- not too daring but fun. But the green ones... they were a little out there... but I wanted to try them.
Like any girl I decided to ask for advice. And when my friend didn't answer... the husband did and emphatically told me: Green!

I was a little surprised because I expected his response to me more like my brother's who exclaimed "those are bright" when he first saw me wear them.

Maybe I've underestimated my husband's fashion sense, just maybe.

But then again, the husband's favorite combo is a t-shirt over a long-sleeved t-shirt.

2011 was a good year. I am blessed because there have been hard years, years that have felt unfair and 2011 was none of those things.

In 2011...

I started blogging here

I opened my Etsy shop

I went to Blog Sugar and met wonderful people.

I visited my best friend and we planted succulents.

I started taking photos of what I wore (and tried to ignore the stares from passing neighbors)

I documented why I love my doggy (and why he drives me crazy)

I came to terms with my freckles

I wrote a letter to my teenage self

My husband wrote the sweetest anniversary post

I rocked red lipstick, and encouraged you guys to rock it too.

And I felt utterly thankful that I have readers and blog friends who leave me little love notes and support. Thank you, thank you and here's to another year of Rouge & Whimsy!

five things friday resolution-style

I don't usually do New Years resolutions. It's not because I'm against them, really, it's more because I'm not good at following through.

And I hate not following through with something.

I don't make resolutions because I don't want to fail.

But life is about failure and getting back up. It's about growing. We aren't called to be stagnant but to grow and change and learn.

So I made a few resolutions -- nothing big, nothing scary -- just five things that I would like to work on.

1. thankfulness. I am beyond blessed, I really am, and there is no reason to make this a part of my daily life.

2. prayer. what i found on pinterest sums it up. I usually pray as an after-thought to my planning and dissecting and discussing. That should change.

3. house stuffs. there are some rooms I want to paint, some things that need to be fixed, some general projects that I would love to make a reality.

4. saving money. The husband and I aren't necessarily bad at this, but I know we could get better.

5. biz. I have an idea for my etsy shop & indie biz future and I need to make the time and effort to follow through. I promise full disclosure later. :)

interruptions

I am not good at interruptions.

I have ideas, i have a set schedule and when each box does not get checked off the list-- when something disrupts the perfectly placed plans I've made, it frustrates me.
and I realized recently that this is no way to live.

Last week I had things to do. I was sewing scarves for Christmas presents and I was woefully behind. Luckily the husband was at a basketball game and I was home with a few hours stretching ahead of me-- no interruptions, no distractions. Just me, the sewing machine, and the puppy.

Until my phone rang. A friend was locked out of her house, her husband was 20 miles north and not answering his phone. Could she please come over?

Inside I grimaced. But cheerfully I responded.

She was over shortly and we made mint tea and curled up on the couch by the Christmas tree.

Her husband didn't get back for a few hours and my sewing time was displaced by heart-to-heart talks, fried eggs with toast, more tea and some late-night TV.

If it was an interruption, it was now a welcome one. And when she left I realized that too often my life is so scheduled and sometimes a distraction, a blip in my daily life is necessary.

When I think back a few years from now, I will not remember the next day as I finished up the scarves in a little bit of hurry, but I will remember watching "Murder, She Wrote" reruns on Lifetime with a friend until 11 on a weekday night.

how do you handle interruptions? are you a strict scheduler like I am? (I confess, I may be a teensy bit Type-A) :)

Plaid and mustard yellow.

It's not out-there crazy but a little more out-there than I may have done a year ago. I really like this look actually and really like plaid in general-- especially on my husband. (he may or may not have gotten some plaid shirts for Christmas) :)

I took a bit of a break from blogging the past week or so.

It was good for me.

As much as I honestly, truly, really-really love to blog, love to write, love to search for inspiration for my next post, the holidays had me running around and blogging just didn't quite fit in. It was like me attempting to jam a puzzle piece into the wrong spot.

People were in town, there were parties, gifts to be made, gifts to be wrapped and then family to see and celebrations to be had.

But I'm back now. So hi. :)

I have decided, however, to be a little more lax in my blogging this month (the husband is silently cheering while reading this) just because I think I should. I hope you all forgive me.

But in the meantime, yes, my Christmas was wonderful because I read... a lot... and slept and ate even more. I am still full actually.

And I am so thankful for wonderful family and friends, a warm home, beautiful memories that I made, and so much more.

what i wore to the nutcracker

The husband surprised me with tickets to the Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker for Christmas.

He picked me up from work and we went to dinner first at a little French-Cajun restaurant. On our way to the restaurant we passed a small park near the ballet that has a colored light display, a perfect place for a quick photo op.

Dinner was perfect, the ballet was wonderful and the best part was spending time together with the husband (and maybe having an excuse to dress up a bit.)

I wore the Boogie Woogie from Shabby Apple that was my bridesmaid dress for my cousin's wedding. I love when you can rewear something like that.

Hello lovely Rouge & Whimsy readers, I am so excited to guest post for the fantastic Erika. I have been so lucky to have met Erika in real life! Eeek! We met in Seattle at a Mariners game and again at BlogSugar 11!I found a fun yet simple gift idea to give to a friend who has kiddos. Scratch that, this gift would be good for anyone who likes ice cream!

A sundae fundae box! (of course I found this great idea via pinterest. That site is a gold mine and a time sucker all rolled into one!) Here is the what I pinned under my DIY gift board:

I went to target and spent about $10 to get all the supplies:

-4 tubs of Christmas sprinkles {found in the dollar bin}
-A box of waffle bowls {I didn’t get waffle cones, you could do either or both}
-A few boxes of fun candy {found in the Christmas section, on sale for $1}
-A jar of hot fudge {If I was making multiple Sundae Fundae boxes I would have made my own hot fudge but budget wise it was cheaper to buy a single jar}

This Christmas I am obsessed with the lime green and bright red color combo so I grabbed my red and white bakers twine, some lime green and Christmas themed bags and went to work.

Tada, all of my ingredients are now dressed up in festive attire. I also found some random holiday themed labels in a craft folder so I added those to add a little extra whimsy.

Next up I wrapped a boot box in wrapping paper {perfect sundae fundae fun box}

After an interesting wrap job {wrapping the box proved a bit harder than I anticipated} I added all my sundae supplies and viola!

I know my friend’s kiddos will absolutely love this little box of fun!I also think this would be a fun and thoughtful house/apartment warming gift for anyone who loves ice cream.All this talk about ice cream is making me hungry, freezer here I come!

my 5 last-minute gift ideas

I don't mean to stress you out but Christmas is this upcoming weekend.

And if you're like me, you're juggling work, life and a million other things and perhaps shopping is something that got a little bit waysided.

Rather than braving the crowds at the mall (one of my least favorite things) try a few of these unique ideas for a heartfelt gift.

1. an activity 

Rather than give more stuff, make your gift an activity! Go to a movie, a new restaurant or the museum. Sometimes time spent together is better anyway.

When I was in college, my brother filled a bag with some of my favorite foods and treats-- things I would never buy for myself: chocolate, wine, satsumas, fancy tea and coffee. Honestly sometimes this is just a thoughtful as something you don't eat. And if you make it -- double points!

3. framed art and photos

if it's too late to get something from Etsy -- make your own art by editing photos you've taken. Don't worry about needing photoshop -- Picasa is a great tool for free.

4. service

My love language is service, meaning that I feel most loved when people do something for me. If someone gave me the gift of cleaning my house, cooking dinner for me for a week or anything else like that -- I would be over the moon. This is not a cop-out gift -- honestly.

Oh this week was one of those weeks. Not like last week... but still one of those weeks where Tuesday felt like Thursday.

But I'm feeling thankful for my husband, my lovely family and the promise of days off for Christmas next week!

Five good things this week:

1. Packaging up some Etsy orders and hitting up the post office

2. Small group with my girls -- hot chocolate sipping and talking in front of the Christmas tree

3. My best friend is going to be home in Seattle on Saturday! I can't wait to spend time with her.

4. Sunday night I watched Home Alone 2 with the husband and my brother. Perfect evening.

5. My silly doggy who ate an entire celery stalk that I dropped while cooking dinner. He honestly will eat anything.

In college, I had a roommate who changed her ringtone to Frosty the Snowman the day after Halloween.

It drove me a little bit nuts because sometimes Christmas music is cheesy and grating. It's repetitive and if you've ever worked retail during the holidays you know what I mean.

So for years I resisted the Christmas mixes on Pandora, the all Christmas music radio stations and the Starbucks Christmas cds available for purchase along with your latte.

But I've found myself slipping with a few beautiful songs that are so perfect for Christmas but so different from Frosty the Snowman. I could almost listen to them all year round.

Grab a mug of hot chocolate or a cup of coffee and enjoy some of my favorites.

This song is a bittersweet reminder of the darkness that so many face in the midst of winter.

Cold Hands Warm Hearts Swap

At work today we were talking about the post office and the trials and tribulations that sometimes occur there.

But I had to admit to my coworkers wholeheartedly that I still love snail mail -- I really do love sending mail and receiving mail. (This may be partially why I have a handmade shop-- I love mailing things to people!)

So when there was a swap hosted by some of my favorites sandy and ilene, I knew I had to join because honestly, it meant more mail in the mailbox.

I was also really excited to get paired up with Kelly from The Pretty Bee because I was pretty sure I had recently hearted everything in her jewelry shop Linkel Designs. (seriously, go check her shop now.)

finding my style

I remember when I suddenly realized that what I was wearing mattered to some people.

It was fourth grade and my mom had just sewed me these horse print leggings. I loved horses and I loved leggings; it was the perfect combination.

When I got to school wearing my new duds one of my classmates asked me what I was wearing.

"It looks like little kid pajamas!" he said.

My heart sank and I told my mom when I got home that I wasn't going to wear those pants again.

Fast-forward to junior high where my style was whatever everyone was wearing. I didn't like back-to-school shopping because we went shopping before school started. How was I supposed to know what everyone else was wearing if we went before school started?

One year everyone had Old Navy tech vests. Does anyone remember those? I didn't have one but I knew I needed to have one. And when I saved up to finally get my tech vest, the one I got was wrong. It was different from everyone else's. It was all wrong.

In high school I started branching out a little bit. I added ribbons to some skirts, I cut a few t-shirts. I was becoming a little comfortable with who I was and what I decided I liked.

The outfit I'm wearing in the photos I would never have wore a few years ago. Not necessarily because leggings weren't really "in" a few years ago, but because I'm wearing what I like and what I feel comfortable in. It's a good feeling.

but I kinda wish I still had those horse leggings.

keeping it classy

I used to use the word classy a lot in college. I'd talk about what was, or wasn't classy.

My friends would tease me about it.

"You're so classy, Erika," they'd said, right when I'd do something not so sophisticated.

The thing is, sometimes I wish I lived in a "classier" time of pumps, tights and day dresses with pearls.

But I don't. And I work at a place where flip-flops and holey jeans are acceptable.

So I put on this coat. I scored it at Nordstrom Rack this fall and I love that as soon as I put it on, I feel classy.

I've been a bit scattered.

Do you ever have weeks like that?

It started on Monday with my plan to make chili in the crock pot. I was up a little early chopping veggies and had it all set.

All day I dreamed of my chili dinner with corn bread. When I get home I realized that I had not plugged the chili in. Dinner was tacos and I put the crock pot contents in the fridge.

On Tuesday, I tried again and made sure to plug the crock pot in. When the husband called me, he told me that I had somehow not plugged it all the way in. And the chili, after two days, was not worth saving. It felt like the biggest waste as I tossed it.

When I forgot my concert tickets (thank goodness the husband brought them to me) and on Friday left my phone at home, it just made me feel like I didn't have it together, that I couldn't remember anything.

This weekend I'm trying to decompress, to gather my marbles and pick up the pieces for next week.

And perhaps, double and triple check my crockpot when I leave for the day.

Christmas Party: Chocolate kiss tree

It's day three of the Christmas Party and Virginia from Geeky and Sassy is here with a cute and delicious Christmas treat.

Hi! I'm Virginia from Geeky and Sassy. I'm so excited to be here with all of you to share one of our Christmas traditions growing up. The Christmas Tree with Kisses. As kids, my sisters and I looked forward to this tree, along with salt-dough ornaments and decorating the tree. This may have been my favorite part - probably because it has to do with chocolate.

When the box of decorations came up from the basement a styrofoam tree came up too. We would slather it with icing and slide the Hershey's Kisses on. It is one of those decorations that you just want to keep walking by and snitching from, so don't make it too big ;)

"Sugar/Egg Glue" Recipe & Directions

Start beating 2 egg whites in the bowl.
Slowly add the sugar.
Add a bit of warm water if needed....I mean a tiny, eensy weensy bit. (I didn't need any, but it depends on your egg size.)
Mix until it is smooth and doesn't drip off of the beater. (Think of the consistency of wall putty)

Spread onto the tree in a thin coating leaving the very top until the very end (unless you want sticky fingers!)
Depending on the size of the tree, spread it on the bottom half and then place the kisses and then do the top half....or else it may dry on you.
Leave a bit of icing in the bowl just in case one of the kisses doesn't want to stick. Just slide a bit more icing on the bottom and try again.
The timing and consistency is the toughest part of this whole thing....once you make the icing, you need to use it.

When the season is over just rinse off the sugar and let the styrofoam dry completely before storing for the next year.

More ideas?

Add some mints or striped candies instead.

Use an edible icing (this one has raw egg whites in it.)

Try different shapes or 2 different sized trees.

what I would wear to a christmas soiree

Part of me wishes I had a fancy Christmas party to go to. Part of me wishes that Seattle wasn't so dang casual all the time and instead of bowling-themed work party, I could pick out a little black dress and pair it with so glittery, sparkly pretties.

If I was going to such a party, I'd pick up that gorgeous Shabby Apple dress and pair it with a pair of Seychelles heels (love, love, love) and the cutest polka-dot tights ever from Modcloth. The tights are a whopping $34 (not worth it when I rip tights quite easily) but See Kate Sew has an amazing DIY to make 'em on the cheap. I may or may not attempt it this weekend.

If you don't have the cash for a new dress-- get creative with what you have. Any dress gets new life with a new pair of tights-- polka-dotted or not-- and some bright-colored accessories, and of course, my go-to: red lipstick.

Hello Rouge & Whimsy readers!

My name is Mary Susan (I often go by Mae or Mae Mae...a name given to me by my little sister) and I blog over at Two Hoots & a Holler. Today I am SO EXCITED to be guest posting here at Rouge & Whimsy. I found Erika's blog a few months back and immediately fell in love!

Thank you Erika for giving me a chance to talk about one of the best parts of Christmas:

gift wrapping!

My mother is an artist and growing up I always loved to watch the time, detail, and care she put into her gift wrapping. She would stay up all night, making sure the bow was just right and the paper was aligned perfectly. To this day, her gift wrapping is almost as exciting as the gift itself :)

As an adult, I don't have a lot of time to spend on wrapping (or the budget to buy pre-made bags, boxes, ribbons, and tags.) That being said, I still love to present gifts in wrapping that is unique, special, one-of-a-kind, handmade, and done with a bit more thought that the typical gift bag or holiday paper.

This year, I'm in the middle of an adoption (in fact I may be in Ghana as you read this!), taking classes for my doctorate, and working part-time. I don't have a ton of time to wrap gifts, but that doesn't mean they can't be cute! Here are some gifts I wrapped this week, with things I had lying around the house. I bought the black and white paper letters at a craft store years ago and I'm still using them! They were super cheap and each letter peels off of a stack like post-its.

I stole this crossword wrapping paper idea from wanleo.com via Pinterest. This puzzle, however, is totally custom to my recipient's name! I made it in about thirty seconds on puzzlemaker.com, hit print and voila! (I used to teach middle school.) Super easy and so much fun! (Half the fun is finding the name in the search after you print it... I'm not going to lie... It took me a little while to find "Lindsay" since it's going down to up... but they have a "solutions" button, if you don't have time to waste.)

I use jars for so many things... vases, containers, candle holders, etc. I hate throwing away good jars, but let's face it... I can't save them all. Luckily, some of my gifts fit into jars! Then, if I wrap them really well, the recipient will take the gift out and then keep the jar to display/hold their everyday items : pencils, pens, rulers, etc. Two gifts in one!

This was wrapped with a torn apart brown paper bag...
