little things


Can you tell my shirt is glittery? It has the faintest glittery sheen-- a grey, casual t-shirt with just the right amount of sparkle.


I never used to like gold or sparkly shirts but now I find myself drawn to them and when I saw this shirt at the Nordstrom anniversary sale, I decided to treat myself even though, let's be honest, it was not something I needed. (As if anyone really needs a glittery shirt.)


It's funny how style changes. I feel like I'm ever evolving-- sometimes with what's in and sometimes, decidedly not. Like I know the high-low skirt thing is in, but I just can't really get on board with that. And I am also really having a hard time with acid-wash denim. An intern at work was wearing a pair of acid-washed jeans and I just couldn't wrap my mind around ever wearing it. But gold, glittery t-shirts -- I can most definitely get on that train.

mango coconut popsicles


This post alternatively could be called "what I ate three of in the span of an hour."

Seriously that good.



I got on the popsicle train fairly recently-- I tried last year with popsicle molds from the dollar store -- but this year I decided to go legit and bought this set by Tovolo. With Amazon Prime, (which I don't even recall signing up for but is awesome), it was on my doorstep the next day.

I made mojito popsicles, but I've decided that these mango-coconut versions are much, much better (and easier)!


Ingredients:
1 mango
1 can of coconut milk
2 tsp of sugar, divided or 3 tbs of honey
1/8 cup of water

I cut and diced one ripe mango and blended it with a bit of water and 1 tsp of sugar. Then I added just 1/4 cup of coconut milk and continued to blend until smooth. This I poured into the molds.

I blended the remaining coconut milk with the rest of the sugar and topped the popsicle molds with the milk. (I had quite a bit of milk left over.)

While this provided for a pretty, swirly popsicle, I think from now on I'll just blend 1/2 cup of coconut milk with the mango and do a solid popsicle. The coconut part of the popsicle was bland compared to the mango and didn't quite have the amazing, creaming consistency that the mango did.

But it really didn't matter as I did still eat three in an evening.

renegade san francisco

When I was accepted into Renegade San Francisco, I was a little bit surprised. It's the cream of the crop handmade shows and incredibly competitive. By even applying, I felt like I was putting myself out there quite a bit -- and I prepared myself for not getting in. 

Then when I got in, panic mode set in and the last month or so was a lot of work. The few days before the show, I was a ball of nerves-- even flying down, I could hardly sit still in my airplane seat. The husband came with me, and I was grateful for his support -- as well as the support I got by sharing a booth with Julie --  she's a handmade pro. :)



The weekend in a few words: exhausting, overwhelming and incredible. I had a huge fan girl moment when Brit Morin of Brit & Co bought a clutch from me and then when I spied Melissa Fleis, a runner-up on Project Runway, wandering through the crowd.


My only regret? That I had more time to shop! I picked up a bracelet from Fresh Tangerine as a thank you for a friend and a necklace from We See Stars, but with all the incredible makers there, it was hard to see it all! (I'll have to online shop later.)

I left Renegade feeling both encouraged about my shop and inspired to get back to work. I'm tired but in an odd way recharged. I'm happy to be home-- where it's warmer (San Fran was pretty chilly for summer) -- and ready to start planning for more.

four years.

today marks four years-- four!-- that the husband and I've been married. As is tradition, he's taking over the blog for today.

Hi.  It’s the husband again.  I know, I know, it’s disappointing to not have the lovely Erika writing this post.  Have no fear, this is just my annual anniversary post in which I share my deepest insights and sought after wisdom on the topic of marriage.  She’ll be back next week to share actual insights and wisdom on anything and everything diy.  I’ve been thinking a lot about what I wanted to say in this space over the past two or three weeks.  I knew I’d be asked to write another blog post for Erika and I wanted to make sure I at least had a direction for my post instead of just kind of rambling on and on. The one word that kept coming to mind when I thought about our marriage over the past year was support.  



As some of you know, Erika will be heading to San Francisco today for the Renegade Craft Fair.  She’s worked really hard for the past three years building up to this weekend.  She’s sacrificed tons of free nights, weekends, and (most importantly to her) sleep to make her shop what it is today.  By no means has she pinnacled with her shop, but she’s currently higher up the mountain than she’s ever been.  And I could not be more proud of her.


One thing Erika’s always told me is that in marriage, each person needs to take turns supporting the other.  She got this from her (amazing) mother and has said it to me as long as we’ve been together. And after watching her work for the past few months in the rapid build-up to Renegade, that became crystal clear to me.  Throughout a marriage, each person will go through periods of struggle, hardship, triumph, and failure.  One of the most challenging, but at the same time beautiful, things about that is being the person standing next to a spouse who’s going through something difficult. 



The person who’s taught me how to do that best is Erika.  She has been blessed by God with the ability to put up with me and stand by me when I’m facing something difficult, demanding, or even heart-breaking.  When I slipped in the shower two years ago and tore cartilage in my knee (true story--swear to God) and all but ended my (running) racing career, Erika supported me and listened to my complaining about not being able to run, even though she probably didn’t have a clue as to what I was feeling.  At that point she didn’t really run and I don’t think she could really comprehend why I was so upset and frustrated.  Nonetheless, she listened and talked and listened some more for two years while I complained about my knee.  



I guess what I’m trying to say is that marriage is about supporting your spouse through the good times and the bad.  Each person will have their time to challenge themselves and try new things.  It’s so important for the other person to stand by their partner and help them by listening and caring about whatever it is that they’re doing.  

I’ve seen too many examples of couples with different interests not caring a bit about what their partner is doing, and it absolutely kills me.  The whole point of marriage love each other as much as possible.  And the best way to do that is sacrificing your own interests and putting your spouse first. 


In parting, I will say to those of you that are married: support your spouse in whatever ventures they are pursuing.  That doesn’t mean you have to like it or even be super interested in it.  It just means that you need to be there and walk with them as they experience something new in life.  Erika did such a good job of supporting me with my running injury that she ran a half-marathon last month.  Who knows, maybe I’ll start making bags in time for Renegade next year.  Ok, probably not.

weekend post on wednesday



Typically I would share about my weekend on Monday. Maybe a Tuesday. But I decided to infuse some weekend into the middle of the week. Every day needs a little more weekend.

I've been working a lot on Renegade. I've mentioned that a lot -- or at least it feels like I mention it a lot on here -- but honestly, it's my life right now. This weekend, however, I decided I needed a short break so the husband and I headed up to Whidbey Island.

My mom redoes homes for a living. She buys nearly-condemned homes and refreshes them, updates the layout, the appliances, literally breathing new life into a home that no one else would live in. So when she said she was buying a little cabin-type house on Whidbey Island, I thought nothing of it. But this time around, she and my dad decided to keep the house, rather than sell it.





It's not beachront, but perches on a bluff and a trail leads down to the beach below. The house is modest and a bit outdated, but to me, it's perfect. It's another escape-- a place to breathe.


We just spent Sunday up there, but it was enough to get a little recharge before I hit the ground running Monday. I'm almost all prepared and the show is this weekend. As I continue to prepare everything, I'm holding onto the peace I felt this past Sunday to get me through the remainder of this week.

things you should know

 

You should know that I have to wear glasses. But I don't do that often. In fact, hardly ever. Whenever I do, people state, somewhat incredulously: "You wear glasses?"

Yes, yes I do but I don't that often because I still have a hard time thinking they look good on me, and also, I just really like the convenience of contacts. Also, because I don't often wear glasses, wearing them makes me sleepy.  True story-- I usually just put glasses on before bed and if I never take them off, my body thinks it's naptime all day.

But after getting this pair from Warby Parker, I feel like I should wear glasses more. The frames are comfortable and I love the buy one, give one policy the company has.

So I'm going to try and be cool and wear these and just resist the nap-time feeling for a bit. (Although, I can't promise I won't give in occasionally.) :)

where i'm going

  

The other night I got lost in an internet black hole. But rather that someone else's blog or website, I started clicking through my blog and reading back words that I written a few months ago, a year ago, two years ago.

And I was struck by how much this little blog of mine has changed. How much I have changed.

I was at a wedding this past Saturday nigh and the maid of honor gave a beautiful speech -- one that is still in my mind -- the words rolling around in my head at moments.

She read from a book, which I can't remember unfortunately, and talked about how we at one age are all of our ages. At age 10, we're age 9, 8, 7 and so on. At age 30, we can still feel moments of age 15 or age 3. She spoke to the bride and groom, saying that she could see their future 80-year-old-selves and how at the moment they would remember this moment, the moment of their wedding, when they were 26 and 27.

I look myself this way-- that there are moments of me being 5 and age 8, and sometimes I see glimpses of the future-- where I'm 50 or 74. All of these seperate moments join to create me, someone who is always changing and as I write this blog, the blog is changing too.

I started blogging when I was first married at a space that no longer exists anymore. And somehow it transferred over year and I started posting outfits, and less DIYs and more and recipes because apparently I'm a little bit of a foodie. And I never mentioned exercise, but now I can't imagine my life without running. Once upon a time there was the blog and a little shop and now the shop feels big and the blog feels little.

And I'm not sure where I'm going with this blog anymore than I can guess who I'll be next year or the year after. I know that there will still be bits of my blog past in the future blog. There may be more running or less running and maybe more recipes or less fashion posts but who's to say.

I'm just thankful for those of you who are here and reading and listening to my rambles. You're all pretty special to me.

recipe: homemade salsa



This week I'm not sure where my head has been.

Saturday morning I woke up to discover that I didn't have any coffee. I leashed up the monster dog and we walked to the store, where I found a bunch of other necessities I had to pick up. Get home and realize that I had left the coffee. Of course.

On Tuesday, I overslept my alarm and ran out the door, pulling on clothes as I went. And I completely forgot to put on my makeup and or even grab my makeup bag to do it on the bus. So there was that.

And of course, there was another fateful day when I forgot to buy salsa. If there's anything you'll need to know is that chips and salsa are always in my house. It's the go-to snack, the go-to comfort good and honestly, sometimes my go-to meal.



It was in that salsa-less moment, that I decided to whip up a batch of my own. And it was surprisingly simple and good.

recipe:
- 1 can of diced tomatoes (or 3-5 tomatoes, depending on size)
- 1 jalepeno (remove the seeds, if you want a milder salsa)
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 white onion, diced
- juice of one lime
- pinch of red pepper (or more, depending on how spicy you like it)
- 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbs of cumin
- 1 tsp of paprika
- 1 tsp of black pepper
- 2 tsp of salt
- handful of fresh cilantro
optional: black beans, corn or anything else you want to throw it in!

Throw everything in a blender, reserved a few sprigs of cilantro for garnish, and blend for just a few seconds to mix everything.

The salsa will keep in the fridge up to a week.

power suit


I've never worked at a place where I needed to dress up.
When I first worked at a newspaper, right out of college, few people wore collared shirts. When I was working the night shift there, some people wore workout clothes, holey jeans and sweatshirts. Nothing fancy.


Even now, working a corporate setting, there's not a whole lot of collared shirts. And in Seattle in general, there's few collared shirts -- the birthplace of grunge is better known for flannel shirts and fleece than business suits.


So whenever I wear this white shirt I feel really formal -- paired with a skirt, I practically feel White House-worthy. With heels, shoot, I'm ready to meet the queen.

There's something about a put-together outfit that makes you feel like you can take on whatever. I understand that term "powersuit," because when you put something like that on, you do feel powerful. My outfit is nowhere near power-suit worthy, but it definitely makes me feel like I can take a lot on-- and with Renegade, I have been taking a lot on. Maybe I'll have to start wearing the white blouse while I stay up sewing these next few days.

make it: black bean patties



Some nights the husband works late and I decide it's time for a girly dinner. I say "girly dinner" because the husband usually likes to have some sort of meat in the meal. I'll make something vegetarian, and afterwards he might say something like "this was delicious--- but next time can we add chicken?"

I'm not against meat-- I do try and eat sustainably farmed meat-- but I also do like to eat vegetarian for dinner at least once a week and usually don't have any meat for lunch. I also have a weird thing against chicken. In college, in the house I lived in, we made meals together and I happened to live with a bunch of girls who would only eat chicken. No red meat, no pork, no fish, nothing. And let me tell you, after eating poorly prepared chicken for four years, you kind of have a problem with eating it. I've been out of college for awhile, but I still have issues with eating that bird.

So I eat a lot of other proteins-- like black beans. I'm obsessed with this one black bean burger at a local bar near our house, so I tried to recreate it and was pretty pleased with the result.

 

ingredients:
one can low-salt black beans, rinsed and drained
3 tbs olive oil 
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 egg white, lightly beaten
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
2 tsp cumin
1 tsp paprika
red pepper to taste 
3 tbs of panko bread crumsb, plus two more cups to roll the patties in

In a blender, pulse the black beans with egg, garlic and salt. Do not overblend, the bean shape should still be slightly visible. (I pulse about 20 times with my lame blender.) 
Scrape the bean mixture into a bowl and stir in the spices and bread crumbs.
Form into four patties. 
Heat a skillet over medium heat, and grease liberally. 
Dredge the patties through the panko and cook in the pan, 10 minutes should do it.
Serve on a bun, or with a mixed green salad.
